Zombies, Aliens, and TEOTWAWKI

In the past few years, I've been following along with pop culture's interest in doomsday scenarios. Whether it's roving zombie hordes, alien invasions, TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It), or the ever popular SHTF (*?!@# Hits The Fan), the common theme revolves around preparing yourself to survive and exist during a time of adversity.

In the spring of 2013, I had occasion to experience the flood disaster of Southern Alberta. I inhabit one of the communities that was heavily impacted by the flooding of the Bow River. Our community was partially evacuated, all but two access points to the community were closed, peoples homes were flooded and infrastructure was damaged. Being an outdoor enthusiast with lots of gear of various types, and an essential knowledge of bushcraft and simple living, I was perhaps better prepared to cope with an emergency than others in my community. I can deal with power outages. My pantry is well stocked. My family can stay warm. Etc... Etc... Yet, there were many learnings from this spring's flood.

As have many before me, I have decided to use the zombie invasion scenario as a fun way to explore the ideas, concepts, and practice of emergency preparedness in our day to day life. Here at Adventure Logistics, we'll provide a link through to existing resources that can help you in your planning for an emergency or crisis in your community. We will also explore the fringe culture of "survivalists" and "preppers" and see if we can find that boundary between common sense and paranoia. We'll add our opinion to the mix through a series of articles, videos, how-to's, and scenario plays. We'll offer some practical advice from our perspective. We'll try some crazy ideas. We'll build useful stupid things like tin can stoves, zombie patrol bicycles, and lean-tos. Through this, we hope to encourage the spirit of adventure, playfulness and enthusiasm by bringing you along while we do our own "prepping."

Our first project will be to look at the "Bug out Bag."

Meanwhile, you can peruse the following links for great information on preparing yourself and your family for a real emergency like a tornado, flood, or power outage (or a zombie invasion):
